Cleaning Your Makeup Brushes with Products Around Your Home
Look out! This week I am going to bring to you some of my best beauty hacks! First up is cleaning those makeup brushes– do it yourself style! You know what the worst part about makeup is? The fact that you are trying to cover up un-perfect skin, which can in return create worse skin, thus leading to an endless cycle. The best thing you can do for your make-up routine is to wash your brushes once a week, or at least every 2, if you are lazy like I can be. Brushes are used daily, put into makeup and swirled around your face, then put back into a bag– a bacteria breeding ground! In order to keep fresh faced and prevent from having to cake that makeup on, follow this simple tutorial. Best part? This stuff should be easy to round up from around your home!
At-Home Products You’ll Need
- your used makeup brushes
- A plate or a bowl
- Virgin olive oil
- Dish soap
Optional
- Baking soda or apple cider vinegar
- Lemon Juice
How to Clean Your Makeup Brushes at Home
- Mix 1 tsp olive oil, baking soda, and lemon juice with 1 tbsp Dawn dish soap
- Take one brush, swirl around in the mixture until you see a generous amount of color coming out of the brush
- Wash brush off in sink
- Run brush under water and squeeze out excess water several times until the water appears clean
- Repeat as many times as necessary on the same brush & mixture
- Create new mixture for each brush
- Repeat process on all brushes
- Pat dry on a paper towel and let air dry the rest of the way (usually is dries overnight)
Benefits of the DIY Products
- Olive Oil: Antibacterial. Oil grabs onto oil (like attracts like) so this takes care of the oil buildup on brushes. Also conditions the brushes so they feel soft
- Dish soap: Known for its cleansing and antibacterial properties, this will eat right through that nasty caked on makeup
- Lemon Juice: Low in pH and high in antibacterial properties, doesn’t cause damage, and smells great!
- Baking soda: Kills bacteria and removes excess dirt cleansing the brushes!
Easy peasy, right? Now enjoy your soft brushes and clean face. xoxo

October 7, 2014It works so well, it sounds counterintuitive because it is OIL, but it actually gets rid of residue!

February 12, 2015Rinse with lukewarm water and wipe your brush against a paper towel. Tip: Be careful not to get the brush barrel wet, as it will loosen the bristles and cause them to fall out. Another way to scrub makeup brushes clean is to use liquid dish soap and a clean sponge.
