Some of you may know that I am currently student teaching (can’t wait for my own classroom). Some of you may not! I am getting two degrees when I graduate in the Spring– one in special education, and the other in elementary education. For the past seven weeks or so I have been student teaching at a very, very low income school. We are talking about the lowest income school in the district, maybe even Utah.
The boundaries of the school not only have low income housing, and a trailer park, but also free housing located within. These children come from poor families, parents working numerous minimum wage jobs, broken homes, or even abusive situations. My heart breaks literally everyday that I am there at work
(yes, I call it work even though it is free).
Children in my special education classroom have been through family divorces, parents with substance abuse, and sometimes even worse, have been abused themselves. When these students come to school, they are looking for a safe place to call home, because home isn’t necessarily a place that brings them comfort. Unfortunately, humans have a certain way of showing that they want or need love. When our basic needs aren’t met, we become mad, angry, grumpy, sad. We act out. There is no difference with these children. They are crying for help every single day.
This past week has been one of the hardest weeks in my teaching experience. There have been many changes made within the school, which is always hard for children looking for rigid schedules. I get home everyday, exhausted, mentally and emotionally. But there was one quote that I read that keeps coming up in my mind:
Because I want these children to feel supported and loved, it motivates me to try to be the best teacher for these students.
Style Note: Fur is everywhere this year! If you paid any attention to the street style at this past New York Fashion Week for Fall 2015 (this was held last week, February 13), you wold have seen the huge use of fur coats. Utah is about 40 degrees warmer than New York right now, so a coat is unnecessary, but this vest from Pink Slip Boutique will do! I wanted to mix textures, so I added this jean jacket from my childhood into the outfit.

February 24, 2015Girl, I feel your post on all levels! I work with kids in the foster care system and I have a background of working with at-risk youth and those in behavioral health… it's so hard to see what these kids go through. Sometimes they just need to know that they are cared for. Keep doing your thing – you're a life changer!

February 25, 2015I have been a school nurse for over 15 years and most of those years were in very low income schools. The quote you posted is so very true!! You will be wonderful…and I admire you for going into special education. It is the most rewarding, but most difficult area!!

February 25, 2015I love that quote- and youre right! Kids don't always know how to express the need for love. Luckily, they have you as a teacher to help them receive what they need. I will pray for you!

March 3, 2015This post took me by surprise. I was ready to read about your look and fur (real or not!), and your words were so touching. That quote reminds me of something that my friend who works in family therapy once told me a teenage client said to her mother "I love her so much I just hate her". It's so hard to be a child and to communicate your feelings. You sound like you will be a wonderful and understanding teacher. Good luck for the rest of your studies, and thanks so much for linking to #AllAboutYou – this is one of my featured posts & pinned!
