If you are a traveler like myself, you know that taking care of your jewelry while on the go is no-joke! I want to always have my favorite accessories with me, but never worry about their safety while I am in another city, state, or country. Peace of mind makes me a happier person, and as they say, the best accessory is your smile!
Since I understand the seriousness of keeping my precious items safe while exploring the world, I compiled a list of how I keep my outfit of the day (OOTD) accessories safe while traveling!
1. Keep accessories off until you’re through airport security. At the front of the line for airport security, you’ll probably start panicking about what you need to remove and put into the baskets for the check. While I have made it through the metal detectors with small pieces of jewelry, it’s better not to bet on it and waste your time or others’ time trying to get to the gate. Take your bling off (including necklaces, watches, and hair barrettes) that may set off the metal detector and keep them in a safe place in your carry-on. PRO TIP: I actually wait to put my accessories back on until we have landed. No one wants to be bloated from flying with a small ring on their finger!
2. Keep your jewelry in a secure storage bag. Ever put your accessories in what you think to be a safe place only to find them scuffed, tangled, or broken? YEAH ME TOO. It’s really an issue! I decided to put a stop to it by keeping my jewelry in a velvet roll-up bag for traveling! Not only does it have various sizes of pockets to keep your different pieces organized, but the soft fabric will keep your jewels protected!
3. Have your expensive and priceless jewelry insured. You can try your best to be careful while sight-seeing, but inevitably, accidents happen. That’s why smart travelers have their jewelry insured! In fact, I just had a friend, well known for traveling frequently, lose her wedding ring while traipsing on the other side of the world! Talk about ruining a trip! Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company has been exclusive insuring jewelry for more than 100 years and offers repair or replacement coverage that includes worldwide travel protection for all types of jewelry and watches. Coverage includes loss, theft, damage, and mysterious disappearance (unexplained loss). Here is an awesome video of how to pack your jewelry before you leave (by Jewelers Mutual).
4. Polish your jewelry once a week. Traveling means you walk a lot, are in the sun a ton, and often have lotion, oil, sweat, and pollution on your skin. When your accessories come in contact with lotion, oil, sweat, and pollution, it can be harmful to the metal and jewels you want to keep safe! It is very important that you prevent tarnishing by cleaning your jewelry with a proper polishing cloth! This will not only remove dirt and grime from your pieces, but also create a protective barrier from future impurities.
I wouldn’t recommend leaving home with my favorite jewelry without researching how to protect it first! Jewelers Mutual has a wonderful Pocket Guide to Traveling with Jewelry that you can download for free! It includes checklists that are essential for before, during, and after your trip.
These are the four biggest tips I have found to keep my jewelry protected while I am traveling! Do you have any recommendations for preserving the value of your jewelry while wandering and roaming the world? Share your advice in the comments below!

June 26, 2017I wish I had insured my ring before I lost it last month…. 30 years and now it's gone and no money to replace it. It's hard enough to lose sentimental items, not being able to replace it makes it more heartbreaking. Sigh.
