Heatless Curls: The Best 3 Techniques to Try

10 Comments 3 min read

If you’ve been on social media lately, chances are you’ve heard about heatless curls! The no-heat styling method has been trending because it doesn’t cause damage and produces effortless wavy hair! Not only that, but heatless curls are less expensive than purchasing styling tools that achieve the same effect. I tried out three different heatless curl methods that involve everyday home-items. Check out the tutorials and results below!

Bouncy Heatless Curls Tutorial

This first heatless curls routine creates my favorite type of curls! If done correctly, the curls should come out bouncy, almost as if done with large, round, heated curlers, similar to hair like Dolly Parton. This technique was also the easiest for me to do on my own hair.

HOW TO: (all this information is in the video above). You’ll need a tall sock, spray bottle of water, hair ties, and a clip.

  1. Section hair into 2-4 sections (I part my thick and coarse hair into 4 sections).
  2. From there, place the sock at the crown of your head and hold in place with a clip.
  3. For best results, spritz hair with water until slightly damp.
  4. Twist that section of hair away from the face and around the sock.
  5. Once you reach the end, wrap the hair into a bun with a hair tie.
  6. Let this sit for a few hours, or overnight. Be sure to use your fingers to lightly brush out the curls for an effortless look. Use hairspray to hold the curls for several days!

Mermaid Waves Without Heat Tools

Secondly is a heatless curls styling routine that will achieve beachy, mermaid waves! If you know how to braid, this tutorial should be a piece of cake to do.

HOW TO: (information provided in video above). You will need a spray bottle of water, and small hair ties.

  1. Start by spraying hair with water until damp.
  2. Section hair into 4-8 sections; I part my very thick hair into 8 sections to get the waves I did in the video above.
  3. Take the first section and begin French braiding the hair. Do this until the nape of the neck, and continue with a regular braid the rest of the way down.
  4. Tie off the ends with a small elastic and let the braids sit overnight. Brush out the braids with fingers to keep the waves intact, and use hairspray to set the style for several days.

How to Get Natural-Looking Heatless Curls

This last heatless curls styling routine is similar to the bouncy curls tutorial, but will produce a more natural-looking, wavy curl. Instead of twisting the hair around the tall sock, you’ll be braiding a sock into each section of hair.

HOW TO: (information provided in video above). You will need a tall sock, spray bottle of water, hair ties, and a clip.

  1. Section hair into 2-4 sections, again, I do 4 sections.
  2. To begin, secure the tall sock at the crown of head with a clip.
  3. Be sure to spray hair with water until a bit wet.
  4. Next, braid sock into one section of hair.
  5. When the braid is complete, wrap braid into a bun with a hair tie.
  6. The curls should be ready after sitting for a few hours, but best results are seen when the technique has sat over night. Brush out the braid with fingers to keep the curls intact, and use hairspray to set the style for several days.

I’m so envious of your long, thick hair. My short hair is super duper crazy fine and thin and I have sparse spots from vitamin deficiencies due to my chronic illness. So curling my hair is pretty frustrating because it ends up just looking limp or awkward. But if I ever decide to grow it out again, I might try one of these methods!

Your hair is so lovely! I need to try some of these out. Usually my hair gets really frizzy when it air dries, but I’m going to try anyway.

Love, love, love your hair Lauryn! At the salons they tell me I have so much hair, but it is fine. Will try 1 and 3! Have you tried sleeping with it? Looks like it would come apart. Just water? No moose or gel and it stays 5 days??? Maybe it’s the hairspray. What kind do you use?

Thank you! I have slept with it, but since I have to have 4 buns, it is slightly uncomfortable. It doesn’t come apart much, and what does come out it usually the ends that don’t require as much curl. It also works for me if I put them in when I wake up, then take the socks out around lunch time. I only add water before and then hairspray after; no moose or gel. I use this hairspray: https://rstyle.me/+2PtUFNrbSpBHIED69HLMmQ
