A Crash Course on the Fashion Rule of Thirds

I have found over the years that my style is actually pretty rudimentary. It is more practical, comfortable, and sensible that what probably deserves a fashion blog.
However, I always incorporate THE RULE OF THIRDS.

What the heck is that? It is easy to learn!

  1. Always incorporate 3 pieces of clothing: a shirt, pants, and a “style” item such as a jacket, a statement necklace, anything that grabs attention. Not wearing pants? The rule still applies! Take 2 statement items and make an outfit!
  2. Never use more than 3 colors in your main outfit: You want your color scheme to be smooth. If there are too many colors going on, people’s eyes will get tired! We want to draw attention to our outfit, not scare it away. Accessories don’t have to count towards these three colors, BUT accessories should be the same color metal or pattern. I am a lover of all things neutral colored. They are so easy to pair! Stripes get me every time as well! If you look into my closet, you’ll find striped patterns like these everywhere!
  3. Everything looks better in 1/3’s: And your outfit will, too! Cutting your body in half with an outfit will not accentuate your figure! Wear high waisted pants, and your legs will take up 2/3 of your body, looking long and lean (leaving 1/3 left!). When wearing a tunic, make sure the length hits lower on your thigh, to leave only a 1/3 of your legs showing. It is just more aesthetically pleasing! You didn’t think the Eiffel Tower was gorgeous because of it’s surroundings, did you? NO WAY! It is constructed into the thirds rules. These tunics are perfect examples of taking up 2/3, instead of cutting the body in half!
I am by no means an expert, and these are only things I have learned while studying fashion blogs and magazines. What I do know is that it has always worked for me!

I totally agree…it also works when cropping your photo! I love anything styled with white converse shoes — I've been meaning to buy a pair!

I've never realized it, but I use this rule! I might wear a skirt, tank and a cardigan or pants, tee and a statement necklace! Now I'm going to really enforce this rule and make sure I'm using it ever time! =)

That's really good advice — especially the 1/3 body part. I never thought of it like that but I totally get it.

I like your philosophy. Basic is usually better. Plus, you could have one main piece you rotate two others out with, and plan ahead.
