Couples Costumes Using Recognizable Characters
There is no shortage of Halloween Spirit around here! Spencer and I have done couples costumes yearly since before we were married. It’s a tradition at this point. We usually try to add a little bit of craftiness in each outfit with a DIY element, but I’ve linked all the items we used, or similar store-bought pieces to make the costumes more ready-to-wear. Here are some ideas to get your witch’s brew flowing for the next Halloween party.
Severus Snape and Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter

One of the reasons I love my mother-in-law is that she always throws good holiday parties. Halloween Spooktaculars are never forgotten, and she goes all out! This year will be our second time doing a murder mystery dinner party with her. The first year was Harry Potter themed, and Spencer and I were given Severus Snape and Bellatrix Lestrange as our dinner party characters. Each guest was dressed as a different fictional person and had a part in a role-play dinner to figure out who the “murderer” was. We had a blast dressing up in these couples costumes, and even included dark mark tattoos and wands!

With the popularity of Barbie after the movie came out in 2023, I knew I wanted to do a costume based around our girl. Truth is, I knew everyone would be wearing the same outfits (her pink western fit being one of them). To stand out in the crowd, we shot for the stars! and went with the 1985 edition of Astronaut Barbie and her alien lover. The helmet was made out of a lamppost globe, which did involve a little DIY to widen the opening for my head! All of the outfits, including the alien mask, green screen suit, bodysuit, and boots, were found on Amazon!
Yzma and Pacha from The Emperor’s New Groove

Last year, Halloween 2020, I went a little crazy creating various Disney villain costumes! One of the last-minute versions was a couples costume with my husband featuring Yzma and Pacha from The Emperor’s New Groove. Although the feather eyelashes had to be bought in advance, they truly made the costume. However, add some wrinkles with makeup, a little black dress, a poncho, and you can make this getup work in a pinch for a Halloween party!

Yet another one of our do-it-yourself cosplays, we went as Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy one year. If you’re okay with scissors and construction paper, this costume will be a piece of cake to put together! We bought gloves to match the SpongeBob characters, but other than that, most of the items we had at our apartment ready to craft. We tried taking a photo with the Invisible Boatmobile, but it was wasn’t showing up in the pictures!

As mentioned before, I am practically the Queen of last-minute Halloween costumes! It’s really not unusual to find me throwing together an outfit the day of an event. I must have lucked out, because
I married a man that happened to come with a gorilla costume. I found some black and green striped tights that were extra witchy, and the rest is history! My Flying Monkey partner and I rode around on a four-wheeler (typical Utah stuff) while I laughed manically like the Wicked Witch of the West at trick-or-treaters.

If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know that I love to get creative and unique with my Halloween costumes! Spencer and I went back and forth about this year’s 2021 couples costume, but watching the show Brand New Cherry Flavor sealed the deal! The character played by Sky Radzion had facial plastic surgery and wore bandages for a few scenes. We took the seed idea and made Tammy Tuck and Ryan O. Plasty our Mummy Makeover personas. This was very, very simple to do since we already had the clothing, makeup, and medical materials to pull it off. The only thing we needed was an unnerving, and plastic-looking, mask for the doctor!

To be completely frank, when we made these piñata costumes it was quite the task! Back then, there weren’t pre-made festive piñata shirts that we could buy. Instead, we spent a couple hours ripping and gluing streamers to things. Spencer even made the donkey hat out of cardboard boxes we had laying around the house. I love a lot of color, so the DIY costumes ended up being worth it!

While writing this post, I honestly tried to remember where we have our skeleton costumes hidden in our apartment. They turned out so cool, and I don’t think I appreciated them enough that year. We spent a lot of time painting bones onto previously worn clothing, but it turns out that there are skeleton suits you can buy. Those purchases honestly would have saved us many hours, and time is money, my friends! If you need me, I’ll be searching for my old bones in my closet.
