Fall Fashion of the Past: 2020 in a Nutshell
With orders to stay home during the pandemic, everyone was finding new ways to spend time with friends and family in the comfort of their home. It’s no secret that the quarantine of 2020 lead many people to embrace ease of wear over everything. Along with that, nearly 80% of white collar companies had their staff working remotely, which meant casual-wear became the norm. Fall fashion of 2020 will still live on a bit into F/W 2021, but with a little bit more boldness!
Experiencing Autumn in Utah
If you’ve read my previous posts about September through December in Utah, you’ve seen my breakdown of what to expect! Autumn time at a high elevation often has warmer days from the sun, and crisp nights once the moon comes out. It’s not uncommon to add layers of clothing as the daylight changes and it gets chillier. You’ll find a range of weather from sun to snow, depending on the month. The best time to experience autumn in Utah is around mid-September to Early October when the foliage begins to change in the mountains. There are plenty of beautiful scenic fall drives you can catch around the valley (psssst! I share some of those locations on my TikTok). If you’re in town, I have to tell you not to miss your chance to see the fall leaves!

Saturated Shades & Perky Prints
After being cooped up for so long, it seems like many are ready to party! This feeling of escape is translating to fashion in a big way. This year, people are welcoming daring trends that they may usually have shied away from. With the feeling of breaking out of isolation in the air, you’ll find more rebellious fashion hitting the stores and the streets. Of course, animal print, like leopard, always seems to be en vogue, but this year brings the addition of cow print. You’ll see cow print on tops, pants, and even hand bags. Fearless fabric colors, especially the tonal type (think: monochromatic) are what fashionistas are now gravitating towards. Neutrals will never go out of style, but courageous combos, like lilac and lime green, are on the scene. Never to be forgotten, leather and faux leather pieces will still be worn, but are getting a taste of the rainbow this season as well.

Cute Crop Tops and Clever Cutouts
While crop tops have been around for a minute, Fall Fashion 2021 is all about the cropped cardigan. They are easy to layer, and can complete any outfit as a third piece. Newer to hit the runways are cutouts creating interesting optics for outfits. We’ve seen the cold-shoulder look, but NYFW in September will show off street style full of cleverly cut pieces to capture the eyes of fashion photographers everywhere. Utah is known for dressing bit more conservatively, but Instagram Influencers in Salt Lake City will be sure to find a way to incorporate the sexy style.

Totally Oversized Tailoring and Freeing Fits
Before, skinny jeans were the end-all-be-all and most people left wide leg pants back in the ’90s. With comfort becoming more of a priority in people’s lives, many Utahns have taken up wearing baggier styles. This doesn’t come with the typical punk rock look, but rather has a more defined silhouette. Millennials and Gen Z alike began including wide leg jeans this past few seasons, but are also beginning to integrate oversized styles with a more tailored fit. Pantsuit sets are still it, but this time the tailoring offers ample room for more freedom while in business attire.

Ponchos & Puffer Coats
Making a surprising resurgence from the early 2000’s (and ’70s) are ponchos! The effortless look brings all the feel-good feelings that Salt Lakers are currently seeking. This style is great for the early season, but will probably be dropped quickly as the days get chillier. Unsurprisingly, puffer coats are still packing the heat for the cold-weather season. They may have been around for a few years, but catch more metallic and adventurous puffer jacket designs in stores this fall and winter.
