Things to Do in The Florida Keys During the Spring

Go to Hungry Tarpon During Your Florida Keys Spring Itinerary

Beside Robbie’s of Islamorada, you’ll find a spot called the Hungry Tarpon. Here, you can get buckets of fish to feed the even larger fish– tarpon! If you’re lucky, a couple of manatees will show up and show off while you’re at the dock.

PRO TIP:  Be on the lookout for the island birds; they love to steal the fish right from your hand.

Commotion on the Ocean in Key West Booze Cruise

Endless pours of beer and margaritas will come your way on this sunset sail with live music. It’s great for adults looking to have a true island vacation experience with laid back vibes. If you want an unbeatable sunset photo, you’ll catch it on this booze cruise put on by Fury Key West called Commotion on the Ocean Sunset Sail.

PRO TIP: Don’t forget your ID and don’t overdo it with the free drinks on board for the best time possible.

Yoga Session in Key West

Ultimately, you are visiting the islands to relax, and Salute to the Soul yoga does just that! They offer virtual, in-person, and private yoga sessions that are sure to leave you feeling energized and grounded. The Babes enjoyed a private session, fit for our tired needs, outside near a gorgeous marina in the early morning.

PRO TIP: Don’t travel with all the bulk; Salute the Sol provides all the yoga equipment you’ll need.

Parasailing is a Must-Do

Listen, parasailing has been on my bucket list for as long as I can remember! I’ve often seen the big parachute towed by boats on other travels. We were lucky enough to have other plans cancel and Sundance Water Sports (located at Robbie’s marina) made time for us to head out high above the water. It wasn’t scary as I expected, I felt very safe, and was it amazingly quiet and peaceful once in the air. We loved our tour guides, who happened to be a married captain and crew member who met on the job!

PRO TIP: for most, if not all, of the activities in Key West, staff make a living off of tips. Be sure to have cash on-hand. 20% is usually the norm.

Add Reef Snorkeling to Your Florida Keys Spring Itinerary

By far one of the coolest things I did in Key West was the Double Dip Snorkel with Fury Water Adventures! A few of the babes went with 30+ people and a crew to two different thriving reefs to snorkel. I saw plenty of colorful fish (including a parrot fish), lots of barracudas, and even a 6 ft reef shark! Free sodas and adult beverages available.

PRO TIP: This is an adventure for good swimmers that don’t get seasick easily. Even though many of us could swim, only two stayed out, and even the most boat-experienced of us had moments of nausea from the waves of the anchored boat. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, though!

Jet Ski Around the Coolest Ocean Properties in Key West

Although this tour required the most up-front effort, it was my favorite of the BTW trip! Barefoot Billy’s jet ski tour took us to many different islands, including multi-million dollar properties! The Real World house, Taylor Swift’s rumored mansion, and so many more homes that cannot be insured because of their treacherous locations. We drove fast, jumped waves, and created wakes with our excellent Barefoot Billy’s tour guide.

PRO TIPGive yourself ample time to take the temporary boat vehicle test prior to your tour. Even though it’s a potentially tricky test, and a little time-consuming, it’s open book, open notes, open search.

Attend a Late Night Drag Show in Key West

Despite being an avid RuPaul’s Drag Race watcher, I hadn’t been to a drag show yet! It felt very fitting to break my drag show virginity in Key West with my girlfriends at 801 Bourbon. It did not disappoint, and local queen Deja stole the show! Don’t be afraid to attend if you are straight or male– there were plenty of both types of people in the audience.

PRO TIP: bring lots of cash! The bartender is able to break larger bills into ones so you can tip the ladies on stage throughout the show.

Exploring the Hemingway House Should Be On Your Florida Keys Spring Itinerary

Honestly, I headed to Ernest Hemingway’s house purely to see the polydactyl cats! The writer was gifted a kitten with six toes, named Snow White, by a sailor friend. These extra-toed cats were seen as good luck by fisherman because, not only could they balance better at sea, but they were great at catching mice on ships! There are 40+ cats that roam the Hemingway House property, most descendants of Snow White, and many with six toes.

PRO TIP: You can explore the house on a guided or self-guided tour. Pick upon your preference for the best time spent.

Observe Butterflies and Flamingos

Near the Southernmost Resort, there is a Butterfly and Nature Conservatory filled with butterflies and birds! A huge room, turned into tropical paradise, allows a walk through trees, plants, and surrounded by flying creatures. Be sure to say hi to the resident flamingo couple, Rhett and Scarlett, who will be making funny calls and dancing at each other during mating season.

PRO TIP: It’s humid in there, so dress accordingly.
